AQUA-SAFE: Improving the safety and security of aquaponic technology for growing fish and vegetables
Aquaponics is a sustainable technology that combines the simultaneous growing of fish and plants in a recirculation system.
Disease control over cultivated species in the system is a major problem. Pesticides cannot be used to treat plants as they harm fish. On the other hand, therapeutic agents cannot be used to treat cultivated hydrobionts as they could be accumulated by plants in the aquaponic system.
The only possible solution to this problem could be biocontrol of pathogens in the aquaponic system.
The aim of the study was to isolate Pseudomonas bacteria from different parts of the aquaponic system and to test their antagonistic effect against pathogens in fish (Saprolegnia parasitica) and plants (Pythium ultimum).

With the development of rooftop aquaponic farms it became possible to use a production niche in the urban environment, which has not been used so far.

This pilot system will demonstrate the possible combination of the use of buildings'roof space for production technologies development along with the simultaneous increase of the aesthetics of the urban environment. The development of these technologies was caused by the continuous increase of the urban population, both all over the world and in our country. Urban aquaponics offers highly productive technology for food production close to the consumer which reduces the negative effects on the environment during transportation. This project will demonstrate the basic principles of organic farming, with food production up to the highest European standards. The pilot system will be powered by "green energy". The integrated use of solar energy, the processing and use of aquaculture waste, the introduction of non-waste technologies - all of this will be a direct link to building the sustainable cities of the future.

The patent refers to an industrial installation for integrated (combined) cultivation of hydrobionts and plants in a closed cycle.
The advantage of the installation:
- The productivity of the installation has been increased by providing appropriate lighting modes
- There are conditions for removal of pathogenic microorganisms that can adversely affect both farmed fish and the hygienic conditions in the aquaponic section
- There is gas exchange - a product of the cultivation of the two types of crops

This patent refers to IMTA installation (Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture SYSTEM) related to the environmentally friendly aquaproduction in seas and oceans.
The advantage of the installation is the efficient treatment of wastewater from fish farming by using the natural flow of the reservoir for subsequent bio-absorption of these residues by other hydrobionts (mussels, algae, crustaceans, etc.). This takes place provided there is a specific placement and connection between the elements from which the installation is built, taking into account the type and speed of the currents in the reservoir. By using the installation, biological water purification and best use of the used feed are achieved. It increases economic efficiency and ensures sustainable and environmentally friendly aquaculture in the aquafarm, while maintaining balance in the aquatic ecosystem.
